Om Tintin Wulia

 

I am an artist/researcher working with themes of movements across borders, and how art and things/nonhuman agents in public space can stimulate public conversations on these themes.

 

As a Postdoctoral Fellow in Design, Crafts and Society with a focus on Migration, I work with HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts (room 401A), the School of Global Studies/SGS (room E309b), and the Centre on Global Migration.

My research is practice-based, seeking to develop an artistic method for mobile ethnography of migratory nonhuman agents. This focus builds on a precursive project on cardboard waste as a migratory nonhuman agent, "Trade/Trace/Transit" (since 2014), which fuses mobile ethnography with public (art) interventions (initially supported by Australia Council for the Arts' New Work - Mid Career grant).

As a part of this research focus I have also been awarded a 2-month Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship to work with the US National Mosquito Collection managed by the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (with its associated Walter Reed Army Institute of Research) at the National Museum of Natural History, Washington DC, in 2019. I will work with WRBU research director Yvonne Linton, looking at arbovirus and mosquito migration.

I hold a BMus in Film Scoring from Berklee College of Music (1995), a BEng in Architecture from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (1997), and a PhD in Art from RMIT University (2014). My practice-based research stem from a strong international practice since 2000, with my works shown in major international exhibitions such as Istanbul Biennale (2005), Yokohama Triennale (2005), Jakarta Biennale (2009), Moscow Biennale (2011), Gwangju Biennale (2012), Asia Pacific Triennale (2012), Jogja Biennale (2013) and Sharjah Biennale (2013), as well as in major survey shows such as The Global Contemporary: Art Worlds after 1989 (ZKM Center for Art and Media, 2011-12) and Global Imaginations (Museum de Lakenhal/Leiden University, 2015).

As a practising artist, my mediums are public interventions, video, sound, installation, drawings, performance and telematic art. I am represented by Milani Gallery, Brisbane. My work is also part of private and public collections worldwide, including in the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum (Netherlands), Singapore Art Museum (Singapore), Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art (Australia) and He Xiangning Art Museum (China).

In 2014-16 I was a recipient of Australia Council for the Arts' Creative Australia Fellowship, as part of which I engaged in self-initiated artist residencies focusing on social practice and public interventions in North America (Detroit/Windsor, New York, Mexico City). In 2016 I was a Jackman Goldwasser Resident at Hyde Park Art Center, South Side Chicago, where I performed "Make Your Own Passport" (initiated in Detroit's Eastern Market with Art Gallery of Windsor in 2014) – a workshop-performance series held in public places to stimulate discussions on statelessness and citizenship by luck – a week after Trump was elected. An exploratory survey as part of this fellowship also led to "The Passport Chain" (since 2018), an ongoing collaboration with schools and community organisations in solidarity with refugees and people seeking asylum in Brisbane, Australia.

In 2017 I represented Indonesia in the 57th Venice Biennale (Arte) with a solo project, “1001 Martian Homes”, simultaneously shown in - and telematically-interconnected between - the twin Indonesian Pavilion(s) in Venice and in a shopping mall in Jakarta. The project is partly based on an ongoing project initiated in 2015 with human rights researcher Ken Setiawan (McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Melbourne) in which we collect and disseminate personal stories about/around the Indonesian mass killings of 1965-66, 1965setiaphari.org (living1965.org).

I serve as a member of editorial boards of GeoHumanities (a journal of the Association of American Geographers, lead by editors Tim Cresswell and Deborah Dixon) and PARSE - Platform for Artistic Research Sweden, Art and Migration research trajectory (with Erling Björgvinsson, Mahmoud Keshavarz and Nicholas de Genova).
