Om Jessica Hemmings

textiles, contemporary craft, postcolonial literature

I joined HDK in January of 2017 as Professor of Crafts & Vice-Prefekt of Research. I currently supervise four PhD candidates at HDK who are undertaking projects that explore jewellery, place making and dissolving heritage / digital and analogue image making in tapestry weaving / community weaving and identity / blacksmithing, tools and the body. I contribute to teaching on the MA Crafts and have a particular interest in how – and why – practitioners write. My research interests focus on contemporary craft, with a particular interest in understanding the broad contribution textiles make to contemporary society.

Forthcoming academic publications include:

  • Hemmings, J. "Knitting after Making: what we do with what we make", Textiles, Community & Controversy: The Knitting Map (Bloomsbury)
  • Hemmings, J. "Can That Be Taught: Lessons in Tacit Knowledge" A Companion to Contemporary Craft (Wiley Blackwell)
  • Hemmings, J. "Where Theory & Practice Meet... Or Not" Agents of Design/Design as Agency (Bloomsbury)

I am on the editorial board of Textile: the journal of Cloth & Culture, external examiner on the MA Textiles at the Royal College of Art (2017-2019) and hold an honorary Adjunct Professorship at UNSW, Sydney Australia (2016-2018). I have been invited external MA & PhD examiner in Australia, Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, New Zealand & USA and currently act as external PhD advisor for research projects at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, London College of Fashion, University College Dublin and Oslo National Academy of the Arts.
