Concrete Banana Peels

Photographer: Richard CollierThe harbour of Frihamnen has a vivid past & future. Today Frihamnen is empty, partly inaccessible. My design solution was to create concrete banana peels in a human size to give the space a new identity, before and during the building of the new development. They refer to the history of Bananpiren & offer an alternative to concrete blocks which currently populate the space.
The recognisable shape of a banana peel up-scaled and in a surprising material (concrete fabric) evokes an appealing image. The function of the peel ranges from a blocking object that says ‘Caution! Slippery Edge!’, to a humorous sculpture, to a piece of furniture which turns Frihamnen into a more lively, secure & accessible space.
