Jessica Hemmings: Mimicry

Mimicry refers to imitation - copying someone or something. Biomimicry, for example, believes that by emulating systems in nature we can find elegant design solutions. This lecture considers the fine lines between mimicry, admiration and plagiarism.

When does mimicry teach us something and when is it a rip off? How can we distinguish intention from accident or ignorance? Are there moments when copying is justified - perhaps because a replica is all that now remains? Examples discussed will include artists such as Meekyoung Shin, Barry X Ball, Shari Mendelson and Morehshin Allahyari.

Jessica Hemmings writes about textiles. Her PhD, awarded by the University of Edinburgh in 2006, is published by kalliope paperbacks under the title Yvonne Vera: The Voice of Cloth (2008). She has taught at Central Saint Martins, Rhode Island School of Design, Winchester School of Art and Edinburgh College of Art. In 2010 she edited a collection of essays titled In the Loop: Knitting, in 2012 edited The Textile Reader and wrote Warp & Weft

Her latest editorial and curatorial project, Cultural Threads, is a book about postcolonial thinking and contemporary textile practice accompanied by a travelling exhibition, Migrations. She is currently Professor of Crafts at HDK, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

The lecture will be held in English.
