Nordic Research Conference in Sloyd, September 17-20, 2019

The conference is organized by HDK - Academy of Design and Crafts in cooperation with the Nordic organization NordFo, Nordic Forum for Research and Development in Craft and Design, which works for various forms of Sloyd related cooperation between the Nordic countries.

The conference is aimed primarily at researchers and teachers at universities and university colleges in the Nordic countries, but the theme of the conference “Make & Learn” also opens up to participants in research and development outside institutional sloyd activities where you process material using various tools to make physical objects. The conference languages are Scandinavian languages and English.

The conference will take place at HDK in central Gothenburg, with a posibility of visiting Nääs old Sloyd seminar.

Themes Make&Learn

The conference focuses on the link between “to make” and “to learn”, thereby Make&Learn. The Swedish term Slöjd [eng Sloyd] is already mentioned in the 14th century law “Östgötalagen” and stands for; canniness, diligence, skillfulness, knowledgeable, wisdom, the ability to be handy, briskly, skilled in craftsmanship, artful, experienced, ingenious and inventive. In NordFo context, Slöjd [eng Sloyd], with its educational meaning, is used as a common umbrella term for education and learning within the Nordic sloyd area in activities where materials and tools are included in the making of artifacts. In relation to research and work for development, central issues will be raised and discussed about “to make” and “to learn” in the four themes of the Make&Learn conference.
