NEW PROGRAMME: Starting autumn 2020 Textile Art will be a specialisation within the BFA Programme in Craft, 180 credits.

Bachelor's programme in Textile Art

Textiles, as material and method, are everywhere around us, in our everyday life, in the traditions, in politics, in technology and in science. The incentive for the Bachelor Programme in Textile Art at HDK is about the desire to develop your expression both professionally and artistically. We cultivate and nourish curiosity, we investigate techniques and materials – how these can be used to create expressions, stories, and new knowledge.

The programme rests on three basic principles that interact: Surface - texture, colour, pattern; Structure - construction, contexture; Context - interpretation, concept, environment. All projects, regardless of technology, material or expression, move between these three areas.

HDK's environments are welcoming and inspiring. The well-equipped textile workshops, with specialized technicians, gives opportunities to experiment with techniques and expressions. Here you will find equipment for working with manual and digital techniques such as weaving, knitting, embroidery, tufting, screen printing, dyeing and much more. You’ll get your own workplace and you have the University Art Library within the walls of the house.

About the programme

The programme mixes theory and practice and encourages you to independent, critical thinking and creativity. Initially, focus is on materials and technology, then you gradually will be guided towards an increasingly individual and complex work within the field.

The goal of the programme is for you to develop practical skills, working methods, critical and analytical ability and artistic integrity. As a student, you are encouraged to participate in national and international exchanges and exhibitions that lay the foundation for future networks.

Courses in visual design, history, writing, communication and theories in arts, crafts and design are held together with students from Ceramic Art and Jewellery Art.

Content

The first year focuses largely on in-depth knowledge of technology, method and expression and is based on the properties of the material. You will also have time to establish and strengthen your artistic language and examine how your artistic idea meets social relevance.

The second year emphasizes the awareness of the relationship between the artistic work and contemporary issues and history. You will receive an orientation in ongoing discussions in arts and crafts, design, art and public design.

During the third year, more time and space for individually formulated projects is provided. Possibilities to do internships or exchange studies with another University is given. The spring term ends with a degree project where you will demonstrate your ability to independently pursue artistic work within a given time frame.

Work areas/continuing studies

Successful completion of the programme anticipates that you will be ready for a professional career as a textile artist. The programme also introduces preparatory knowledge required to apply for master degree programmes in the field.
