We have put together some frequently asked questions and answers concerning international applicantions.
If you can't find the answer to your question here, please contact us on info@hdk.gu.se

Do I meet the entry requirements?
You can see the entry requirement on each programme page. After you have applied your qualifications will be assessed.
It is very important that you submit correct documentation. You can be regarded as unqualified just based on incomplete documentation. Follow the guidelines at universityadmissions.se.
If you are not formally qualified the juries have the possibility of making exemptions from the formal requirements, if they have ranked the portfolio high and consider the applicant’s background to be equal that of the required Bachelor’s degree. This is done on the initiative of the jury and you cannot have to ask for this assessment to be made.

Do I have to know Swedish to study at HDK?
All our Master’s programmes and two of our Bachelor’s programmes (BFA in Metal Art and Wood Oriented Furniture Design) are offered in English, and you need no previous knowledge of Swedish to qualify. Each year we also offer various freestanding courses in English.
If you want to apply for a course or programme taught in Swedish, you can find more information on how to prove your knowledge of Swedish on this page: Behörighet i Svenska
Exchange students do not have to prove knowledge of Swedish before applying for an exchange semester at HDK.

I will not get my result from my English test before the deadline, may I apply anyway?
Deadlines for supplementary documents are available on this page: Key Dates. Documents arriving after the deadline are not considered.

I am studying on the last year of my Bachelor’s degree and I will not be able to submit my BA degree diploma before the deadline. May I apply anyway?
Yes you can apply. You must submit a transcript of records of all your completed semesters up to date, and a document from your university stating that you are an active student in your last semester. Follow the instructions on this page: Students in their final year of Bachelor’s studies

What is the tuition fee, and am I required to pay?
Students who are citizens of countries outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees. However, there are some exceptions to this general rule. Read more about it on Application and tuition fees.
The tuition fee is found on each programme or course page.

Where can I find information about grants and scholarships?
Information about scholarships that cover the cost of tuition fees for fee paying applicants can be found on this page: Scholarships
Information about grants and scholarships for current students can be found on this page: Grants and Scholarships

When is the application period?
Find our deadline dates and instructions for how to apply on this page: How to apply.

I have applied, when will I get the result?
Under “Apply for the programme” on the specific programme page on www.hdk.gu.se you can see which day the Notification of results will be published and other key dates.

Can you describe the selection procedure?
All portfolios of applicants who have made a complete application are assessed by the programme or course jury. Some programmes also select a number of applicants who are called for an interview.
Each programme or course has the portfolio criteria described in the portfolio instructions.
Read more about the application process under “Apply for the programme” on each programme page.

How many applicants do you have, and how many new students are accepted every year?
Our programmes have a limited number of places. The number of applicants is far more than we can accept.
Every year about 35-40 new students are accepted for our MA programmes in design at HDK in Gothenburg and 15-20 new students are accepted for the MA programme in Crafts at HDK in Gothenburg.

When does the academic year start and end?
On this page you can read about the Academic calendar of the University of Gothenburg: Academic Calendar

We can only accept exchange students from our partner schools. Please contact Anki Leissner, International Coordinator for more information.

Have you got student housing for international students?
The Academy of Design and Crafts unfortunately cannot offer any accommodation for our students.
