Bachelor's programme in Jewellery Art

The relationship between man as a carrier and the jewellery is central to the education in. The incentive for the Bachelor Programme in Jewellery Art at HDK is about the desire to develop your expression both professionally and artistically. The programme is the only one of its kind in the Nordic countries.

The programme mixes theory and practice and encourages you to independent, critical thinking and creativity. Initially, focus is on materials and technology, then you gradually will be guided towards an increasingly individual and complex work within the field. Some of the studies are designed as discussion seminars on subjects related to artistic creation and the role of professional jewellery artist.

HDK's environments are welcoming and inspiring. Our teachers, who specialize in different artistic areas, guide and support your development. The well-equipped workshops, with specialized technicians, gives opportunities to experiment with techniques and expressions. The jewellery workshop is primarily equipped for metal work, but it is possible to work with other materials and techniques. Specialist courses are also given, such as casting, enamelling and forging. You’ll get your own workplace and you have the University Art Library within the walls of the house.

Courses in visual design, history, writing, communication and theories in arts, crafts and design are held together with students from Ceramic Art and Textile Art. Possibilities to do internships or exchange studies with another University is given.

The first year focuses largely on in-depth knowledge of technology, method and expression and is based on the properties of the material. You will also have time to establish and strengthen your artistic language and examine how your artistic idea meets social relevance.

The second year emphasizes the awareness of the relationship between the artistic work and contemporary issues and history. You will receive an orientation in ongoing discussions in arts, crafts and design.

During the third year, more time and space for individually formulated projects is provided. The spring term ends with a degree project where you will demonstrate your ability to independently pursue artistic work within a given time frame.

Work areas/continuing studies

Successful completion of the programme anticipates that you will be ready for a professional career as a jewellery artist. The programme also introduces preparatory knowledge required to apply for master degree programmes in the field.
