About here

– a sonic book on Gothenburg

Today the world lies naked in front of us - Google Earth shows it all. But the joy of discovery, the joy of getting lost and following our own imagination seem to have been lost on the way.

In my master degree project I explored the possibilities to present a place in a different way. In a 6 minute long film I show the vision of a book that uses sound rather than pictures to present a glimpse of Gothenburg. Sound offers incredible possibilities when it comes to trigger memory, emotion and imagination. It is a very interesting medium when trying to present information, because it engages the audience in a way pictures could never do. Design sometimes forget that it can tell a richer story by addressing other senses.

Sound can tell a lot of about the life and atmosphere of a city. You understand directly that is not Barcelona or New Delhi I am showing here. A pure visual representation would always say less about the joy living in Gothenburg, about noise, about creativity and activity and about how and if people use spaces.

In a wider sense, this project discusses how we present information. It is not just facts that inform us, we need poetry too. When our imagination makes sense out of things, they start to make sense for us. And maybe more important than knowing something is the ability to be curious, to ask questions and even to doubt information. The way information is given has to consider other features besides efficiency and effectiveness. Products are not just a summary of their function or pure aesthetic form, but should be judged by the experience they facilitate.
