Ett mönster av markplattor i betong

A pattern for concrete floor tiles

I want to give children a puzzle piece to a stimulating outdoor environment and invite adults to participate.
I have designed floor tiles with pre-school children as a target group.
I have been inspired by the Italian Reggio Emilia school of thought, amongst others, where the environment is seen to be the third pedagogy.
Keywords: Flexibility, Sensuality, Challenging and Playful. I consider these words best fit the Reggio Emilia philosophy of environment.

Inspiration
Exciting things happen in an environment where ’bad weather’ is good weather.
Instead of building a shelter against wind and rain, I want to capture these elements and make use of them. At pre-school, it is natural to go out when the sun is shining and stay in when it rains. Many products are designed with ‘good’ weather as a reference point and I have therefore chosen to start with rain as my starting point.

Scenario
”It is raining and the teacher decides to take the children outside. It is always just as exciting when it rains. The water runs down from the roof through the guttering and out into the playground’s own little delta. The floor tiles have channels which lead the water into different channels in the ground and, if you want, it is possible to guide the water yourself. Or put a leaf in a channel so that it quickly floats away. In one cavity, there’s more water that you can splash around in and further away there is a circle with sand that has now become a swamp. There are small holes in the ground and it is fun to build walls out of the leaves and twigs that have collected there. The children can lay their blankets out underneath the roof and eat their fruit. The cushions have the same geometrical patterns. The floor tiles in the ground are both long and high. The children can climb on the higher tiles and use them as tables or chairs. Imagination is the only limitation. During the winter months and in the evenings, the integrated lighting in the ground is welcoming. The lighting also helps to protect the playground from vandalism.

In the spring, the children can plant bulbs and other things in the ground and the weeds peep out of small holes. When the sun is out, the children can build huts out of the branches on the ground and the prefabricated holes in the tiles can be used to put up parasols and painting easels. Last summer, the children had an exhibition of their paintings for their parents and the general public outdoors. Many people came to have a look. It doesn’t take much for fantasy and play to take a hold, under the right conditions.

The Pattern
The pattern has been inspired by natural geometrical shapes. Taking inspiration from triangular constructions, circles and shapes in between the pattern, I tried different solutions with hexagons. The geometrical pattern offers an infinite number of variations. There is great potential to adapt the Delta tiles to each specific place and unique situation. The water is lead through the ‘delta’ (the water channels in the tiles) and instead of being lead away, the children can themselves guide the water in their play.

Jag vill ge barnen en pusselbit till en stimulerande utemiljö och bjuda in vuxna.
Jag har formgett markplattor med förskolans barn som målgrupp.
Min inspiration har bland annat varit det Italienska Reggio Emilias förhållningssätt där miljön anses vara den tredje pedagogen.

Mina nyckelord är Flexibelt, Sinnligt, Utmanande och Lekfullt. Dessa ord anser jag spegla Reggio Emilias Miljö.

Inspiration
I en miljö där ”dåligt väder” är bra väder, då händer det spännande saker.
Istället för att göra skydd för vind och vatten.
vill jag fånga dessa element och dra nytta av dem. På förskolan är det naturligt att gå ut när solen skiner och enligt min uppfattning stanna inne om det regnar. Många produkter formges med det fina vädret som referens och jag har därför valt att utgå från framförallt regn.

Scenario
”-Det regnar ute och fröken går ut med sin barngrupp. Det är alltid lika spännande när det regnar. Vattnet rinner ner från taket ner i stuprännorna och ut i förskolans egna lilla delta. Markplattorna har rännor som leder Dagvattnet till olika rännor i marken och vill man så går det att själv styra vattnet. Ellen lägger i ett löv som snabbt flyter iväg. I en grop finns det mer vatten som man kan plaska i och längre bort en cirkel med sand som nu förvandlats till gegga.  Det finns små hål i marken och där är det roligt att själv bygga väggar av naturmaterial som samlats in. Under taket ute kan barnen sätta sina värmedynor och äta frukt.
Sittdynorna har samma geometriska mönster. Plattorna i marken är både låga och höga. De höga plattorna kan barnen klättra och sitta på samt använda som bord. Bara fantasin sätter gränser. Under vinterhalvåret och kvällar är det välkomnande med integrerad belysning i marken. Dessutom hjälper belysningen förskolan från vandalisering.

På våren planteras det ut lökar och annat skoj i marken och ogräset tittar upp i små hål. När solen värmer bygger barnen kojor av naturmaterial och i prefabricerade hål i plattorna kan ställningar för tex.solskydd och målarstaffli spännas upp.  Förra sommaren hade barnen vernissage för föräldrarna och allmänheten utomhus. Det kom många hit och tittade. Det behövs inte så mycket för att fantasi och lek ska ta fart, bara förutsättningarna finns.”

Mönstret har inspirerats av naturliga geometriska former. Från att ha utgått från triangelkonstruktioner och cirklar och mellanrumsformer prövade jag olika lösningar med Hexagoner. Det geometriska mönstret erbjuder oändligt många variationer. Möjligheten att anpassa Delta plattorna efter varje plats och unik situation är stor.
Dagvattnet ska ledas i ”deltat”, vattenrännor i plattorna, istället för att ledas bort kan barnen leka med vattnet.
