In our textile workshops you will meet Marianne Davidsson who is the technician in charge of the fibre workshop, the hand tufting workshop and the dye shop, and Elinor Gustafsson and Helena Engarås who are the technicians in charge of the textile printing shop.

The fibre workshop

In the fibre workshop different methods are used to create textile constructions, such as weaving, knitting, needlework and other ”free” techniques, for example.


We have 12 countermarch looms (of which one is for damask) and 7 floor looms for tapestry. One has to have prior knowledge in order to set up a loom, but there are often looms available and with ready-dressed warps that can be tried out after a brief introduction by the teacher/technician.

There is also one computer-driven shaft loom and one computer-driven Jacquard loom. The latter gives the weaver the opportunity for example of using a scanned image and transforming defined areas or colours in the image into a maximum of 16 different weaving techniques. One example of this is that one can weave a photographic image with grey tones.

Knitting machines

There are 8 machines for fine knitting and one for coarse knitting. These knitting machines are relatively complicated and students are required to have taken an introductory course in order to be allowed to use them. When a knitted specimen is needed for a particular project, the technician can help with its production.




There are 6 ordinary sewing-machines for needlework, 2 industrial sewing-machines, 3 overlock machines and one special machine for coverstitch.

The industrial machine and the ordinary sewing-machines can be used by anyone who needs them for their projects. Use of the overlock machines requires a run-through by a technician, unless one is already accustomed to using them. A computer-controlled embroidery machine has been leased by textile art and may only be used by those who have attended a special course.

Yarn store

The workshop also includes a yarn store from which all students at HDK are allowed to purchase what they need for their courses and projects at the school. Students who have not previously attended courses in the workshop should contact our technicians to purchase yarn.

The hand tufting workshop

Hand tufting involves shooting yarn into a polyester weave stretched out on a frame, using a tuft gun connected to a compressed-air apparatus. The back of the weave is then glued to attach the yarn firmly. The technique provides many possibilities for variation with regard to form, material and expression.

We have two tuft guns which means that only two people at most can be occupied in the workshop at the same time. There is also a cutting-machine for putting the finishing touches to the tufted surface, as well as a contour cutter.

Students who have attended a course in tufting (held during the second year of textile art) later have the possibility of booking time in the workshop for individual projects.

The dye shop

Textile materials are dyed and patinaed in the dye shop.

There are reactive dyes, direct dyes and vat dyes for cellulose fibres. For animal fibres there are acid dyes and direct dyes. The is also a washing-machine that can be used for reactive dyeing.

After having attended a course in dyeing, you as a student will have access to the use of the workshop on your own. Students who need to dye material for a project, but who have no proficiency in dyeing, must consult a technician. All materials used must be noted and paid for by the student.

The textile print workshop

The Textile print workshop has large pressure tables for traditional screen printing, and a digital textile printer. The prints are mainly on textiles, but it is also possible to print on other materials such as  wood, plastic and paper. Here we experiment with many different techniques to reach a desired expression.
Elinor Gustafsson is a textile artist who is particularly interested in working with color and rhythm, and in how to transform the surface to achieve the expression you are looking for.
